Our Center
Located in historic downtown Petaluma, California, Mahakaruna is the main branch for all venues of Kadampa Buddhism in northern California, from the North Bay and Sacramento all the way up to the Oregon border, as well as Nevada. Previously a branch of Saraha Center, Mahakaruna became an independent center in the spring of 2005. Since the center's first meeting in Petaluma in 2000, Mahakaruna has introduced more than 1,000 people to Buddhism. Mahakaruna has inspired a dedicated core of practioners in Petaluma, Napa, Sacramento, Reno and other cities throughout our broad region.

The name of our center, Mahakaruna, means “Great Compassion”, and we are committed to manifesting great compassion in each of our venues. Every week we have a few first-time visitors, and they often comment on the special atmosphere of peace, warmth and harmony they find at the center. We cherish the opportunity to share the peace our practice fosters with everyone who enters any of our venues.
Our Bookstore
Located in our center in Petaluma, our bookstore offers all of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso's books, in paperback and hardcover (when available), as well as on CD (when available). We also have copies of many sadhanas, and CD's of the prayers which accompany the sadhanas. In addition, we offer malas, small statues and other items to support and enrich your practice. Many of the malas are hand-made by our students.
